Q Fever Vaccination

What is Q-Fever?

Q-Fever is a bacterial infection with symptoms similar to a severe case of the flu.  Though rare, complications may involve the liver, heart and bones. A small number of people may develop post Q fever fatigue syndrome which can last for a number of years. Approximately 300-600 cases of Q-Fever occur in Australia each year. For more information on Q-fever, please refer to Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing

Who is at risk of Q-Fever?

Cattle, sheep and goats are the major source of human infection. Q-Fever is an occupational hazard for people working with these animals, particularly abattoir workers.  New recruits to these occupations are especially at risk because they may not have developed any immunity through previous exposure.  Non-immune visitors to contaminated environments may also become infected. Other people at risk include:
* abattoir workers, and visitors
* veterinary personnel
* stockyard workers
* farmers
* shearers
* animal transporters
* laboratory workers handling potentially infected veterinary samples or visiting abattoirs
* people who cull and process kangaroos.

How is Q-Fever prevented?

In Australia, Q-Fever is prevented by use of a vaccine in conjunction with strict infection control measures, such as the use of protective clothing and stringent personal hygiene.

Can I get vaccinated against Q-Fever at CBD West?

Yes you can, the details are as follows. Vaccination involves a skin test and a blood test to ensure that you have not been exposed to Q-Fever. The vaccination would be given a week after the skin test if both the skin test and blood test are negative.
